HALIFAX – Carleton University’s recent comments towards a court case from 2007 has campuses across the country in an uproar.

A woman known only as ‘Jane Doe’ was sexually assaulted while working after hours in a lab on Carlton University campus. Jane Doe believes the University did not take sufficient responsibility in ensuring the safety of it’s female students, and sued the University.

In the midst of the recently settled case, the University stated, “the victims injuries were caused or contributed to by the plaintiff, through her own negligence. She was not keeping a proper look out for her own safety.”

The assault drew attention to rampant sexual violence on campuses. A group of students called The Coalition for a Carleton Sexual Assault Center formed in response. They are calling for the university to establish a sexual assault centre, and to retract it’s comments.

In this episode of Operation Wake Up, CKDU News Collective host Jane Kirby interviewed Julie Lalonde of the Coalition for a Carleton Sexual Assault Centre.

Also in this Edition of Operation Wake Up!:

Headlines: After recently celebrating her 100th birthday, revered activist and feminist Muriel Duckworth has recently fallen ill.

Atlantica? No! Democracy? Yes!

The last Tuesday of every month on Operation Wake Up! is focused on Atlantica, an Atlantic Canada –Northeast U.S. corporate blueprint for mega-highway, mega port and mega energy development to usher in sweatshop goods from overseas, as well as to move energy from the Atlantic provinces into the heartland of consumption in the U.S. The Atlantica proposal takes no account of indigenous rights, climate change or community interests in general.

June 24th was our monthly installment of Atlantica programming. Hosted by David Parker and featuring interviews with community member Don Mullin from the ‘Save Digby Neck! Stop the Quarry” campaign, a coalition of community groups and environmental NGO’s who successfully stopped a basalt mine from developing in their community. Also featured was an interview with Leo Broderick, spokesperson of the Prince Edward Island Council of Canadians Chapter, who traveled to Maine on the weekend to challenge Brian Lee Crowley in a debate before the legislative committee on the benefits and dangers of free trade in the Atlantic region. Brian Lee Crowley is a spokesperson of AIMS, the main Atlantica proponent.
