Jonathan Goldstein, author, humorist and radio producer best know for his work on WireTap and This American Life is kicking off the 2011 NCRC with the opening keynote address on June 6th from 7:00-9pm in the Potter Auditorium.

Jonathan Goldstein’s writing has appeared in The Walrus, The New York Times, GQ, and The National Post. He is a frequent contributor to PRI’s This American Life and the New York Times Magazine, and was a 2002 co-recipient of The Third Coast Audio Festival’s Gold Prize. In 2004, he was awarded a Canadian National Magazine award for humor. He is author of the books, “Lenny Bruce is Dead” and “Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bible!”

Jonathan will be presenting a reading  and multi-media showcase as well as a discussion on the process of Radio production. This event is open to the public.

CKDU is proud to announce that REFRAKA’s Marie Guyrleine Justin will
be headlining this year’s Women In Radio Conference, as part of the
National Campus and Community Radio Association annual conference
(NCRC).

Justin will speak to conference delegates and the public
about the importance of community radio in her home country, and tell
about the work of REFRAKA.She  is the director of REFRAKA, the
Network of Haitian Women Community Radio Animators. Justin will
deliver the keynote address on Thursday, June 9th, from 7-9pm on the
Dalhousie campus. Members of the public are welcome to attend and
hear this inspiring speaker. Translation will be provided on site.

The NCRC will also present another Haitian radio-related event on
Wednesday, June 8th at 7pm. The Carbon Arc Cinema at the Khyber Arts
Centre will screen The Agronomist, the tale of another Haitian
community radio activist, Jean Dominique.

NCRC Closing Keynote

Rich Terfry (aka Buck 65)

Born in  raised in Mount Uniacke, Nova Scotia,  40 km north of Halifax, Rich was first exposed to rap music in the mid-1980s while listening to Halifax campus community radio station CKDU. CKDU then broadcast at only 33 watts, and he had to climb a tree in his yard to hear the station’s hip hop show on his radio. Fascinated by hip hop, the young Terfry taught himself how to rap, DJ, and, later, to produce records and eventually hosted the CKDU programs The Bassment and then later The Treatment Program.

Now Rich is returning to CKDU, and will be delivering the closing keynote speech of this year’s National Campus and Community Radio Conference, on June 10th.

This event will be open to the public, so keep your eyes, ears and sixth-sense open for more details.

Team NCRC 2011

Just a quick update to let you all know we’ve got a really basic schedule put up in the Schedule section to give you a better sense of how the conference is going to run this year. It’s still early so nothing is set in stone yet so there’ll be tons of updates coming in the near future so stay tuned and we’ll see you in June!

This June, CKDU 88.1FM will host the 30^th annual National Campus and Community Radio Conference in Halifax. Community radio practitioners from across Canada will gather in Halifax to exchange ideas on radio and grassroots media. Workshops will cover production skills, media training, social and cultural issues awareness, technical radio know-how, community outreach and organization, and a variety of topics of value to Canada’s community radio workers and volunteers.
